Companies can do a lot to achieve environmentally friendly warehouse. Today, environmentally and climate-friendly action is more than a publicity stunt for companies or a plus for the image. More and more companies are focusing on values such as sustainability and ecology and are therefore also using environmentally friendly storage. In fact, ecological activities increase the reputation of companies when they use methods that have a positive impact on the environment.
Companies can do a lot to achieve environmentally friendly warehouse. This often requires only a slight change in operating procedures, but the long-term effect is enormous. This starts with the economic consumption of energy and goes through innovative, modern devices and vehicles to use sustainable materials.
1. The packaging materials
A better environmental balance can be achieved, for example, through recyclable packaging materials that can be reused. Materials are used that end users can also use elsewhere than to dispose of the same. Some packaging can also be returned. In addition, companies can dispense with superfluous filling material or excess packaging material if the packaging can be flexibly adapted.
2. Sensible planning of deliveries
It is efficient and good for the environment if deliveries can be sent at the same time and coordinated sensibly and arrive. This also saves the workforce. There are fewer bottlenecks and overlaps in the loading and unloading zone, and the time sequences for loading or unloading are optimised. Precise delivery times with customers are also helpful. This increases and improves productivity, and the workforce is used effectively. The situation is similar to the combination of deliveries that go to addressees in the same area. Drivers can thus work out a clever route that consumes less fuel.
3. Alternative Cross-Docking
For large distribution centres, cross-docking can also be an alternative. Products are transhipped from one container directly to another without being transported to the warehouse. Thus, the goods are sorted in the provision zone before they are transported further. This eliminates the additional space required for storage. As a result, the footprint in the warehouse is reduced, as well as the necessary energy and workforce. However, this requires a complex system to be implemented so that the overall costs can actually be reduced.
4. Enforce Recycling
Warehouses generate a large amount of waste, so in addition to doing your best to eliminate it, you should at least have the proper rules in place to recycle it. Send packing material and used packaging to local recycling facilities and implement on-site recycling methods. Make it easy for your employees to get into the flow of recycling. For example, you might want to put a collection container right next to the area where shrink wrap is removed from plastic pallets and other materials.
5. Better Insulation
Warehouse managers should take a survey on how they can better insulate their facilities. Inadequate insulation and insufficient building materials could result in a loss of air conditioning or heat, sending electricity skyrocketing and wasting valuable energy. This might seem like a giant, costly project to take on, but the long-term savings make it a worthy investment. Analyse your facilities to see where insulation improvements can be made and monitor the savings difference.
